Elementary School Secondary Stage Students’ Landmark Perceptions

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine landmark perception of elementaryschool students. The study was implemented with 1025 students from 8 cities(Şanlıurfa, Ardahan, Afyonkarahisar, Adana, Çorum, Kırşehir, Ankara, Aksaray) inTurkey. The students lived in different settlements (village, town, and city), being indifferent grade levels (6, 7 and 8th) and being in different economic features. Themeasurement tool prepared for this study applied in the period from March to May2010. The study was designed as descriptive method and qualitative researchmethod was used. The data were obtained with qualitative research methods, and thestudy designed as a descriptive survey method. Measurement tool was prepared inthe form of open-ended questions and answers were analyzed in accordance withqualitative research methods. At the end of the study, it was determined that theplaces that 6, 7 and 8th grade students’ give importance in Turkey and around theworld. Findings are important in terms of leading in teaching geographical space forstudents in primary education.
