LA CONQUETE DES HYDROCARBURES EN SIBERIE OCCIDENTALE, LE MODELE CENTRE-PERIPHERIE REVISITE

Abstract

West Siberia is not often studied in Geography, however it presents on its own a great interest as a full-scale laboratory of a case of spatial change under process since its hydrocarbon were exploited. This region brought Russia among the main hydrocarbon-producing countries and its economical function is nowadays more industry-orientated. The territorial transition implies multi-temporal variations of spatial structures at regional, national and international scale. The core-periphery model is under renewal showing strong resilience. West Siberia, as a periphery, becomes more and more integrated. Times shows that spread of development is the main process that occurs between national core and West Siberia. Meanwhile, Siberia as a whole homogeneous periphery becomes less and less true. There, the backwash process dominates, and the gap between secondary cores and the rest of Siberia increases.
