LOCALLY AVAILABLE SOIL AMENDMENTS AS A PARTIAL SUBSTITUTE FOR INORGANIC FERTILIZERS ON SOIL AND GROUND WATER QUALITIES
Journal Title: Asian J of Pharm Sci & Tech - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 1
Abstract
ABSTRACT Sandy soils are more susceptible to leaching with high application rates of manure and making the ground water potentially hazardous. A leaching column experiment was carried out to quantify the nitrate and heavy metal accumulation (Fe2+ & Mn2+) and leaching in sandy soil to assess the impact of locally available soil amendments on leaching loss and ground water quality in sandy soils. Farm Yard manure (FYM), Poultry Manure (PM), Tank Silt (TS), Paddy straw (PS) and Compost (COM) were chosen as organic amendments and urea as inorganic amendment for this experiment. Experiment consists of six treatments and three replicates, arranged in a complete randomized block design. Treatments included: T1- Control (Urea) , T2-Farm yard manure + Urea (FYM +Urea), T3-Poultry manure + Urea (PM + Urea) , T4-Tank silt + Urea (TS+ Urea) , T5-Paddy Straw + Urea (PS +Urea) and T6-Compost + Urea (COM + Urea). Results indicated higher available nitrate content (27.7 ppm) in soil in poultry manure treatment and higher nitrate leaching in control (13 ppm). There was a significant correlation between the amount of Fe 2+ and Mn2+ in soil amendments and leaching loss. Among the treatments higher available Fe2+ and Mn2+ in soil and leaching was observed in compost treatment. Key words: Compost, Poultry manure, Leaching, Nitrate.
