PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF SOME TRADITIONAL AROMATIC PLANT SPECIES OF THOUBAL DISTRICT, MANIPUR
Journal Title: Asian J of Pharm Sci & Tech - Year 2015, Vol 5, Issue 1
Abstract
ABSTRACT The present paper deals with phytochemical analysis of seventeen indigenous aromatic plants belonging to eight different families of the Thoubal district, Manipur. Among the aromatic plants, the methanolic extraction of 11 aromatic plant species show the positive results for the presence of phytochemicals i.e. alkaloids, proteins, carbohydrates, phenols and tannins, flavonoids, saponin, glycosides, steroid, terpenoids, oils and fats. While Hedychium marginatum gives all the positive results of phytochemical analysis except the carbohydrates and Zanthoxylum limonella shows the negative results for the presence of carbohydrates and saponins. The remaining five aromatic plants i.e. Zanthoxylum limonella, Cinnamomum tamala, Citrus latipes, Goniothalamus sesquipedalis and Alternanthera philoxeroides give the positive results of the entire phytochemical test except saponins. Out of seventeen aromatic plants, Hedychium coronarium , Curcuma angustifolia and Curcuma caesia are included in the IUCN red data list as endangered, threatened, vulnerable and critical endangered plant species. Key words: Aromatic plants, phytochemical analysis and Thoubal.
