Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Chemistry and Environment (IJRCE) - Year 2013, Vol 3, Issue 2
Abstract
Tribal farmers of Bastar region grow variety of livelihood support crops from ages which are specifically suited to agro-climatic conditions. These include millet, tubers, niger, horse gram and toria in uplands and rice in lowland. The upland crops especially millet are very important in providing food and nutritional security particularly in draught situations. The tribal community has survived over centuries on these crops. In recent time more emphasis was given on cultivation of rice and diversification of uplands from millets to maize and pulses. The area under its cultivation has drastically reduced. The major reason from shift from millets is its low yield due to unavailability of seeds of high yielding varieties and no support price. However, current research results have established that with improved management techniques this crop can prove as boon to tribal economy as well as food and nutritional security to tribal regions. Finger millet is a humble grain with low glycemic index which makes it more suitable for diabetic patients. Additionally, it is a rich source of calcium (344 mg/100g) and helps in supplementing the calcium in human body. Its nutritional value has placed these crops on high preference in select urban market and there is great possibility of further increasing profitability of its cultivation if proper value addition and marketing is ensured
