Ratcheting of 316L stainless steel thin wire under tension-torsion loading
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2016, Vol 10, Issue 38
Abstract
A series of cyclic tension-torsion tests under symmetric shear strain and asymmetric axial stress control in various loading paths are conducted on 100 μm-diameter 316L steel wires applying a micro tensiontorsion fatigue testing apparatus. The ratcheting strain of the thin wire increases with increasing axial mean stress and decreases in a sequence of linear, rhombic and circular paths. The macro-scale based cyclic plastic constitutive models with kinematic hardening rules of the Ohno-Wang (OW) and the Chen-Jiao-Kim (C-J-K) are evaluated for the thin wire. Comparing with the O-W, the C-J-K predicts more accurately under high axial stress. While the loading path effects on ratcheting for wire specimens are basically simulated, the macro-based models tend to under-estimate the effect of phase difference between axial and torsional loadings and the ratcheting evolution in the initial 50 cycles

Numerical investigation on stress corrosion cracking behavior ofdissimilar weld joints in pressurized water reactor plants
There have been incidents recently where stress corrosion cracking (SCC) observed in the dissimilarmetal weld (DMW) joints connecting the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) nozzle with the hot leg pipe. Due to thecomple...
Numerical study of fracture arrest on snow cover
Under the hypothesis of a perfectly brittle phenomenon, avalanche triggering can be investigated numerically by means of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). Since, however, the real phenomenon is intrinsically dyna...

Failure of cargo aileron’s actuator
During a ferry flight, in a standard operation condition and at cruising level, a military cargo experienced a double hydraulic system failure due to a structural damage of the dual booster actuator. The booster...
Interpreting experimental fracture toughness results of quasi-brittle natural materials through multi-parameter approaches
Natural stones like marbles are often employed as façade panels to externally cover buildings. These natural materials tend to exhibit a quasi-brittle nonlinear fracture behaviour which, conversely to concrete co...
