Rhizoplane mycoflora of cocoyam [colocasia esculenta (l.) Schott] corms at nsukka, nigeria and their involvement in rot development during storage

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2013, Vol 4, Issue 3

Abstract

Corms of cocoyam [Colocasia esculenta (L) Schott] planted in five different local government areas in Nsukka zone, Enugu State, were employed for this study. Six months old corms were used for these mycoflora investigations which lasted for five months and for two seasons. Rhizoplane mycoflora were isolated from freshly harvested corms on agar media. Fungi consistently isolated included Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc., Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc., Botryodiplodia theobromae Pat.’, Aspergillus niger van Tiegh, Penicillium sp. and Pythium sp. The frequency of occurrence of these organisms differed significantly (P  0.05) with S. rolfsii having the highest percentage frequency (25.17) followed by B. theobromae (25.16), F. solani (13.70) and the least being Pythium sp. with only (1.07). Pathogenicity tests revealed that the mycoflora isolated from the corm surfaces were involved in initiating rot of cocoyam corms during storage. The severity of rot differed significantly (P  0.05) among isolates with S. rolfsii causing most severe rot followed by B. theobromae and F. solani while Pythium sp. caused very mild rot. Penicillium sp. and A. niger did not cause any rot
