Seasonal variations of population density of root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita as affected by different cropping sequences
Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2015, Vol 10, Issue 1
Abstract
Based on two cropping sequences including pepper- cucumber- common bean-sesame and green bean - cucumber-onion- sesame for controlling root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita under protected greenhouse conditions. Results showed that the population density of root knot nematode fluctuated with respective plants in both two sequences after 2 and 4months from planting each crop. Cucumber and common bean in the first sequence were found to be good hosts for root knot nematode. As for the second sequence, cucumber and green bean had higher significant (p≤5%) population density of root knot nematode. The least number of nematodes were found on sesame plants. No galls or eggmasses were found on onion. It is concluded that use of poor hosts or non-host crops may be beneficial for controlling root knot nematode population densities in intensive cropping system and reducing the dependence on nematicides.
