SLEEP APNEA AND TYPE 2 DIABETES: A SHORT REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
Journal Title: Romanian Journal of Diabetes Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases - Year 2012, Vol 19, Issue 1
Abstract
The prevalence of diabetes and obesity has reached epidemic proportions. Even if today it is an accepted fact that diet and reduced physical activity are causes of obesity epidemic, sleep disturbances are seen as risk factors for obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Regardless of the nature of the relation between sleep apnea and diabetes, the observed association have important clinical, epidemiological and public health implications. Clinical studies have shown that the cardiovascular morbidity and mortality is high, both in diabetes and sleep apnea, overcoming the prevalence observed in general population. Thus, understanding the implications of sleep apnea in alteration of glucose metabolism and cardiovascular risk could contribute to the prevention of both micro- and macrovascular complications.

CHANGES IN PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SKIN IN PATIENTS WITH INSUFFICIENT THERAPEUTIC CONTROLLED DIABETES MELLITUS
Cutaneous complications are common in diabetes. Previous assays suggest that hyperglycemia and decreased insulin signal/secretion are involved in the impairment of skin function. Objective: To evaluate the biophysical ch...
THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ADIPONECTIN, LEPTIN, PROINFLAMMATORY MARKERS AND METABOLIC SYNDROME IN OBESE, NONDIABETIC SUBJECTS
The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between adipokines (adiponectin and leptin), inflammatory markers, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in obese, non-diabetic subjects. Methods: Thirty three ob...
METABOLIC SYNDROME – THE "SILENT KILLER", A CONTINUING CHALLENGE

VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY EFFECTS UPON DIABETES MELLITUS AND ITS CARDIOVASCULAR AND RENAL CHRONIC COMPLICATIONS
Vitamin D was proved to have multiple non-skeletal actions, its receptor being expressed by almost every tissue, consequently proper levels being necessary for their optimal functioning. Although biologically inactive, 2...
