Strain gradient elasticity within the symmetric BEM formulation
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 29
Abstract
The symmetric Galerkin Boundary Element Method is used to address a class of strain gradientelastic materials featured by a free energy function of the (classical) strain and of its (first) gradient. With respectto the classical elasticity, additional response variables intervene, such as the normal derivative of thedisplacements on the boundary, and the work-coniugate double tractions. The fundamental solutions - featuringa fourth order partial differential equations (PDEs) system - exhibit singularities which in 2D may be of theorder 1/ r 4 .New techniques are developed, which allow the elimination of most of the latter singularities. The present paper has to be intended as a research communication wherein some results, being elaboratedwithin a more general paper [1], are reported.

La storia degli studi sulla frattura è inestricabilmente connessa con il progresso della tecnologia. All'inizio pochissimo fu scritto. Dobbiamo riconoscere a Leonardo e Galileo il merito di essere stati fra i primi a scr...
On the influence of T-Stress on photoelastic analysis under pure mode II loading
According to the classical definition for in-plane modes of crack deformation, the constant stress term T exists only in the presence of mode I. However, recent studies show that this term can exist in mode II cond...
Research on borehole stability of shale based on seepage-stress-damage coupling model
In oil drilling, one of the most complicated problems is borehole stability of shale. Based on the theory of continuum damage mechanics, a modified Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion according to plastic damage evoluti...
The theory of critical distances applied to problems in fracture and fatigue of bone
The theory of critical distances (TCD) has been applied to predict notch-based fracture and fatigue in a wide range of materials and components. The present paper describes a series of projects in which we applied this a...
