Study on heterosis of some experimental hybrids in rice

Abstract
The experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Regional Station, Comilla, Bangladesh to study on heterosis of sixty experimental hybrids in rice during boro 2009-10 season. Sixty experimental hybrids and their 5 female parents (Cytoplasmic genetic male sterile line or A line) and 12 male parents (Restorer or R line) were used in the experiment with BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI hybrid dhan1 as standard checks. The experiment was conducted following randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Among the 60 hybrids, 25 showed positive significant standard heterosis for grain yield over short duration standard check BRRI dhan28, where 15 hybrids gave more than 15% standard heterosis. Eighteen hybrids expressed positive significant heterosis over long duration standard check BRRI dhan29 for grain yield. Among them 6 hybrids viz. PMS 8A/BR168R, PMS 8A/AjayaR, BRRI 3A/IR73004-107-3-3-2R, BRRI 3A/BR6839-41-5-1R, IR73328A/IR40750R and IR73328A/Wan 3R showed more than 15% standard heterosis over the check BRRI dhan29 and identified as promising. These 6 hybrids exhibited positive significant standard heterosis over BRRI hybrid dhan1 for grain yield. It was also observed that the identified 6 hybrids showed significant positive heterosis over mid parent and better parent for panicle per square meter, spikelets per panicle and productivity except BRRI 3A/BR6839-41-5-1R and PMS 8A/AjayaR.
