The effects of sowing density and sowing pattern on quantity and quality yield and some morphological characteristics of sweet corn (Zea mays l.),H.S.C. 403 cultivar.

Journal Title: Scientia Agriculturae - Year 2013, Vol 1, Issue 2

Abstract

To examine the effect of plant densities and sowing patterns on yield and agronomic characteristics of sweet corn (hybrid S.C.403), a field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station of Gorgan. This experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design arranged in a factorial with four replications. The experiment had four levels of plant densities (D1=45000, D2=55000, D3=65000, D4=75000) with two planting arrangements (p1=single row and p2=double row 20 cm space apart). Plant density and planting patterns and interactions of these were impressed the amount of fresh grain product, ear length and most of morphological parameters. Combination treatments showed: high plant density (75000 plant ha-1) in double row pattern produced the most fresh grain yield (13143 kg h-1) and was not significantly different with double row 65000 plant ha-1 treatment. The highest crude protein (1127 kg ha-1), also was produced by 75000 plant ha-1 plant density and 20 centimeter double row. Other morphological parameters such as, ear length, ear seed row, seed in row and number of seed per ear were the best at low plant density. Although with double row patterns, plant density could be increased at most of ear characters but it decreased with increase of density to more than 65000 plant ha-1. It means at minimum and medium plant density especially on double - row pattern, the bushes can grown better and produce a good ear. Ear marketing obviously decreased not only for fresh consumption in despite of significant increase of fresh grain weight in 75000 plant per hectare was recommended for better marketing sweet corn with double row planting arrangement.
