The philosophical concept of conscience by Mieczysław A. Krąpiec

Abstract
In her analysis, the author aims to bring out from M.A. Krąpiec’s philosophical works the most important pieces concerning the issues of moral conscience and refer them to the current socio-cultural problems, such as axiological disorientation, the absolutisation of freedom and the objectification of a human being. The author points out that Krąpiec’s theory of moral conscience is metaphysical and draws on the tradition of classical philosophy, e.g. of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. According to Krąpiec, moral conscience is: the norm regulating human conduct (e.g. a practical judgment that tells man what to do); awareness that accompanies human action in a reflective or non-reflective manner; a key factor in the development of human freedom; the norm which itself is normalized by objective good and therefore can be subject to education. People can shape their own conduct, although it is impossible to fully rationalize human behaviour. Therefore, Krąpiec points out that man must work to improve his moral judgment (moral consciousness): to recognize in any matter at hand what is good and what is evil. Krąpiec’s study of human actions leaves room for psychological, sociological and theological research in this area. Moreover, his explanation of the issue of moral conscience can contribute to formulating an integrated theory of moral conscience, i.e. the theory in which the results of research in various fields of science are taken into account and in which the autonomy of different scientific methods is respected.
