Use of Circumferentially Cracked Bar sample for CTOD fracture toughness determination in the upper shelf regime
Journal Title: Frattura ed Integrità Strutturale - Year 2014, Vol 8, Issue 30
Abstract
In this work, the use of circumferentially cracked bar (CCB) sample to determine material fracture toughness in the upper shelf regime for carbon steels has been investigated. Since high fracture toughness materials are known to exhibit extensive crack tip blunting before ductile crack initiation, accurate specimen design is required to provide realistic fracture toughness measurement. Here, a CCB was designed to have similar loss of constraint as for SENT sample. Continuum damage mechanics was used to predict the occurrence of ductile crack initiation and propagation. Finite element analysis was performed to predict specimen response and to compare computed J-integral crack driving force with measured CTOD. Finally, experimental tests were performed on X65 carbon steel and the measured critical CTOD was compared with available fracture data obtained with SENT.

Fatigue crack propagation in short-fiber reinforced plastics
The influence of fiber orientation on the crack propagation behavior was studied with single edgenotched specimens which were cut from an injection-molded plate of short-fiber reinforced plastics of polyp...
A dimensional analysis approach to fatigue in quasi-brittle materials
In this study, a generalized Barenblatt and Botvina dimensional analysis approach to fatigue crack growth is proposed in order to highlight and explain the deviations from the classical power-law equations used to charac...
Load history effects on fatigue crack propagation: Its effect on the R-curve for threshold
The study deals with the effect of load history during threshold and fatigue crack propagation measurements in the near threshold regime. The compression pre cracking and the stepwise increasing load amplitude te...
Crack detection in beam-like structures bynonlinear harmonic identification
The dynamic behavior of beam-like structures with fatigue cracks forced by harmonic excitation ischaracterized by the appearance of sub and super-harmonics in the response even in presence of cracks withsmall depth...
Weight Function Method for computations of crack face displacements and stress intensity factors of center cracks
The weight function method provides a powerful and reliable tool for the determination of the stress intensity factor around the crack tip in a linearly elastic cracked solid subjected to arbitrary loading condit...
