Neurogenesis in the epileptic brain: a brief overview from temporal lobe epilepsy.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2011, Vol 63, Issue 6
Abstract
Dentate granule cell neurogenesis persists throughout life in the hippocampus of mammals. Alterations in this process occur in many neurological diseases, including epilepsy. Among the different types of epilepsy, the most frequent is temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Therefore, a number of laboratory studies use animal models of TLE to observe the fate of neuronal cells after seizures. Hippocampal neurogenesis is very sensitive to physiological and pathological stimuli. Seizures, as pathological stimuli, alter both the extent and the pattern of neurogenesis, which is associated with cognitive function. Various alterations in neurogenesis are observed depending on the amount of time that has elapsed after the seizures. In acute seizures, neurogenesis generally increases, whereas in chronic epilepsy, neurogenesis decreases. Moreover, several methods currently used for the treatment of brain disorders such as TLE can also have significant impacts on cognitive functions. This review is focused on the recent findings regarding neurogenesis in animal models of TLE.

Inhibition of Wnt/β-catenin signaling mediates ursolic acid-induced apoptosis in PC-3 prostate cancer cells.
Background: Ursolic acid, a pentacyclic triterpenoid, is known to exert antitumor activity in breast, lung, liver and colon cancers. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanism of ursolic acid in prostate cancer cells still re...
Contribution of NO, ATP-sensitive K+ channels and prostaglandins to adenosine receptor agonists-induced relaxation of the rat tail artery.
The mechanism of relaxation in the rat tail artery induced by the adenosine A(1) receptor-selective agonist N(6)-cyclohexyladenosine (CHA, 10 nM-300 microM) and the adenosine A1/A(2a) receptor agonist 5'-N-ethylcarboxami...
Cytokines, prostaglandins and nitric oxide in the regulation of stress-response systems.
Hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is accepted as one of the fundamental biological mechanisms that underlie major depression. This hyperactivity is caused by diminished feedback inhibition of...
Lipid peroxidation and antioxidant protection in patients during acute depressive episodes and in remission after fluoxetine treatment.
Increasing numbers of studies indicate that free radicals and their derivatives play a role in some neuropsychiatric disorders, such as depression. The aim of this study was to investigate the activities of antioxidant e...
Search for drugs of the combined anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties: 1-methyl-N'-(hydroxymethyl)nicotinamide.
It has already been reported that 1-methylnicotinamide (MNA(+)), a primary metabolite of nicotinamide (vitamin B(3)), possesses remarkable anti-inflammatory properties [3]. This communication shows that 1-methyl-N'-(hydr...
