New approach to Caplan’s syndrome
Journal Title: Journal of Pre-Clinical and Clinical Research - Year 2008, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
A combination of rheumatoid arthritis and pneumoconiosis is observed in 2-6% of cases of diseases among people occupationally exposed to either the crystal or fibrous form of silica. Chest radiology of patients affected by this syndrome shows multiple, rounded opacifications, usually 0.5-5.0 cm in diameter, as well as positive serologic reactions to the presence of the rheumatoid agent. The authors analysed a comprehensive material of 187 cases with the diagnosis of pneumoconiosis in grinders/casting cleaners with an homogenous source of exposure to fibrous dust, and one observed case of Caplan’s syndrome in a female who worked as a crane operator. The diagnosis was made based on occupational interview, evaluation of X-ray of the chest and bones, and serologic response typical for rheumatoid arthritis. Pneumoconiosis preceded rheumatoid arthritis by several years. Within 7 years of ambulatory follow-up, the progression of radiological changes in the lungs remained moderate, both with respect to type and density of the opacities.

The influence of cyclosporine A, cyclothiazide and luzindole on the electroconvulsive threshold in mice
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of cyclosporine A (CSA) (a widely used immunosuppressant drug), cyclothiazide (CTZ) (an inhibitor of desensitization of glutamatergic AMPA receptors) and luzindole...
Effect of three glutamatergic metabotropic receptor ligands on electrically-induced seizures in mice
The objective of this study was to determine whether the effect of 3 agonists of glutamatergic metabotropic receptors (mGluRs): ACPT, DCPG, MTPG. ACPT and DCPG (agonists of mGluR III receptors) administered at the dose o...
Effects of infrasound generated in urban areas on health of people and animals – an attempt to localize environmental infrasound sources using computer simulations
Introduction. Inaudible but ubiquitous environmental infrasound undoubtedly affects the frame of mind and health of humans. Objective. The object of the study is to prove that civil engineering objects can be sources o...
Benefits of alpha-ketoglutarate versus succinate on rat muscle dysfunction as a result of exposure to a uremic environment[sub][/sub]
Muscle weakness is a prominent feature of end-state renal failure. While the cause of this strongly disabling muscle condition is at present unknown, there are suggestions that metabolic factors may play a role in this t...
