New Investigations, Finds and Discoveries Concerning the Hellenistic City Walls of Teos

Abstract
In this contribution, on the basis of new archeological and epigraphic discoveries obtained as a result of various survey works, geophysical investigations, exploratory works and excavations conducted between the years 2010 and 2015, the Hellenistic city walls of Teos are examined in detail. In the first part the newly discovered buildings are presented, i.e. two towers (Southern Wall Tower 1–2) and a gate with two towers (Necropolis Gate) that, due to its dimensions, is thought to have been one of the main entrances of the city, these being unearthed through the excavations conducted on the Southern city wall. In the Western city wall two gates (Dionysus Gate and Herodotus Gate) were found in the course of excavations, while five towers constructed 35 m apart were discovered through geophysical research and one of these five towers was verified through an exploratory excavation. The second part of this article concerns nine epigraphic documents, three of which were found during the course of the new excavation works and surveys, recording some renovation and repairs made to the Hellenistic city walls. While no. 1 records the expenses amounting to 5562 drachms 4 obols and 320 Alexander drachms for constructing the wall of stone blocks and for making the mud-bricks, no. 2 and 3 are fragments suggesting a new wall-building inscription from the letter forms employed. Two of the six previously published inscriptions (no. 4 and 9) were rediscovered and of these no. 4 is understood to have come from the Necropolis Gate. The reason for this is that the excavated evidence from the Necropolis Gate is confirmed by the description provided in the inscription. Following the general evaluation of the city wall inscriptions of Teos, all of the previously published inscriptions are also given in a catalogue forming an Appendix.
