NEW STROKES TO THE PROSCOPOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF THE ODESSA SCIENTIST-HISTORIAN A. G. GOTALOV‑GOTLIB

Abstract
In the article, an attempt was made to reconstruct certain fragments of the biography of the Odessa historian A. G. Gotalov-Gotlib, the teacher, historian of medieval studies, pedagogy and public education systems of many countries of the world, based on a considerable body of documentary materials, primarily for the first time introduced into scientific circulation. In the 1920’s – 1950’s. the scientist took an active part in the formation and development of the cultural life of Odessa. A significant layer of scientific literature devoted to the person of the scientist in which a large number of errors and inaccuracies in his biography. Scientific literature is represented by a significant layer of the narrative dedicated to the person of A. G. Gotalov-Gotlib. Among them there are publications that have a different genre, character and tone of presentation: informational, absolutely idealistic, publicisticaccusatory and rational-analytical. Among more than two dozen publications, only six are written using a significant body of historical sources, using a critical approach to them, without the apparent desire of the authors to embellish the biography of A. G. Gotalov-Gotlib and exalt his personality. Attracted for writing the article, identified archival materials that have been deposited and stored in document stores in Odessa, Kiev and Moscow, allowed to make edits and clarifications in the biography of the professor. The historical sources brought to scientific circulation for presenting new strokes of the reconstruction of the prosopographical portrait of A. G. Gotalov-Gotlib are extremely diverse both in their origin and in their content. A comprehensive study of historical sources makes it possible to trace the permanent processes in the life of A. G. Gotalov-Gotlib against the backdrop of dramatic socio-political and socioeconomic situations typical of the Russian Empire / USSR in the first half of the twentieth century. The amendments made help significantly to reconstruct some fragments of his biography in a new perspective, eliminate the inaccuracies in it and bring new touches to the prosopographical portrait of A. G. Gotalov-Gotlib in the context of his private and everyday practices. These facts biography A. G. Gotapov-Gottlieb clearly describe him as a brilliant representative-conformist scholar who under the influence of existing political regimes pressure took the existing order of things, the prevailing view of the masses, unscrupulously and uncritically followed the dominant pattern of behavior.
