NICKNAMES AS SOCIO-CULTURAL SYMBOLS

Abstract
The article investigates that the main reasons for the nicknames’ formation in the English language is the perception of the environment by a person both positively and negatively - socially-evaluated. While nominating, the status and role of the denotate in the society is taken into consideration. Regardless of the scope of use (on the micro or macrosocial level), the nicknames perform a number of sociopragmatic functions: social identification, social demarcation, social control, social identification, humiliation and pejorative connotation.
