No association of three GRIN2B polymorphisms with lithium response in bipolar patients.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2009, Vol 61, Issue 3
Abstract
We investigated three polymorphisms in the NMDA receptor 2B subunit gene (GRIN2B) as a candidate gene for lithium response involved in glutamatergic neurotransmission. One hundred five bipolar patients treated with lithium for at least 5 years were analyzed. The lithium response was assessed as excellent - no affective episodes during lithium treatment; partial - 50% reduction in the episode index; or no response - less than 50% reduction, no change or worsening in the episode index. Genotypes for the -200G/T, 366C/G and rs890G/T GRIN2B polymorphisms were established using the PCR-RFLP method. Genotype distributions were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for all three polymorphisms. No association was found between the three polymorphisms studied and the treatment response to lithium. The authors conclude that polymorphisms of the GRIN2B gene did not show an association with the treatment response to lithium in bipolar patients.

Basic mechanisms of antiepileptic drugs and their pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic interactions: an update.
This article aims to summarize the current views of AED action and the promising new targets for the pharmacotherapy of epilepsy. In the first section of this paper, a neurobiological basis of epilepsy treatment and brie...
Research advances in basic mechanisms of seizures and antiepileptic drug action.
Epilepsy is a common neurological disease but the mechanism of seizure generation has been only partially unraveled. Furthermore, almost 30% of epileptic patients are resistant to pharmacological treatment. Therefore, el...
Negative influence of L-dopa on subjectively assessed sleep but not on nocturnal polysomnography in Parkinson's disease.
Background: Sleep disorders are highly prevalent among patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Chronic medication with L-dopa may be one of the factors that contributes to poor sleep quality. The aim of this study was to...
Biliverdin reductase: new features of an old enzyme and its potential therapeutic significance.
Biliverdin reductase (BVR) was known for a long time solely as an enzyme converting biliverdin to bilirubin, the major physiological antioxidant. Recent years revealed unique features of this protein which are not relate...
Effects of aspirin on the levels of hydrogen sulfide and sulfane sulfur in mouse tissues.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of aspirin (ASA) on anaerobic cysteine metabolism, which yields sulfane sulfur-containing compounds and hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), in mouse liver and brain. In order to so...
