Nominacja Józefa Szumlańskiego na biskupa białoruskiego (25 IV 1670)
Journal Title: Miscellanea Historico-Archivistica - Year 2018, Vol 25, Issue 25
Abstract
Appointment of Józef Szumlański as Bishop of Belarus (25 April 1670). After the passing of Orthodox Bishop of Lviv Atanazy Żeliborski in 1666, a few years of struggle for that bishopric have taken place. In 1667, Józef Szumlański received royal appointment as Bishop of Lviv. He could not, however, take his position, due to Antoni Winnicki, Orthodox metropolitan of Kiev, who managed Lviv diocese in vacancy after the passing of Żeliborski and strived to take it over. Unable to realize those plans, Winnicki has presented another candidate for Bishop of Lviv – Jeremiasz Świstelnicki, who also received the royal appointment to the bishopric in 1668. Issuing two appointments has led to a dual power situation in the Orthodox diocese of Lviv, exacerbating and extending the conflict. One attempt to resolve it was a plan to move Szumlański to another diocese, by appointing him the Bishop of Belarus (Mstislaw). Royal Chancellery has prepared the appointment document, dated 25 April 1670, however the appointment was never effected. The conflict regarding Lviv bishopric has lasted until 1676, when it was resolved by King John III Sobieski. The published document is a contribution to knowledge about the background of Lviv bishopric conflict. This document was not known to historians so far, thus its contents are not taken into consideration in the literature on the Orthodox bishopric conflict.
