Normal Echocardiographic Parameters of Healthy Adult Individuals working in Natonal Heart Centre

Journal Title: Nepalese Heart Journal - Year 2012, Vol 9, Issue 1

Abstract

Background Studies evaluatng potental differences in normal cardiac dimensions and body mass indices of various ethnic populatons using 2D echocardiography have reported variatons based on gender and ethnicity. Currently, accepted echocardiographic reference values are from US studies, and the limited informaton is available on Nepalese populaton. The purpose of this study was to derive populaton-based reference values for two-dimensional (2D) guided M-mode echocardiographic dimensions and lef ventricular mass of adult Nepalese that can be applied in epidemiologic studies, clinical trials and clinical practce. Methods 97 individuals were randomly selected, out of 502 staffs working in our hospital, who were over 18 years of age and were free of cardiovascular disease. Subjects underwent M-mode and 2D echocardiogram with color Doppler study. Reference values were derived for end-diastolic and end-systolic lef ventricular internal dimensions, lef ventricular wall thickness, lef atrial dimension, aorta, LV mass. Measurements were described by mean, standard deviaton and 95% reference range. Results Echocardiographic measurements were within standard normal limits. The measurements of aorta, lef atrium, interventricular septum, lef ventricle in systole and diastole, lef posterior wall and lef ventricular mass, adjusted or not for body surface area, were signifcantly higher in males. Several echocardiographic measurements, adjusted or not for anthropometric measurements, had different mean and range than the reference limits in US-based studies. Conclusion The means and range for the measurements of lef atrium volume, lef ventricular diastolic dimension and lef ventricular mass found in this survey were lower than those indicated by the internatonal literature and accepted as normal limits. The results of this study strongly indicate the need for a larger scale study to further establish ethnic-specifc and gender-specifc echocardiographic reference values for the Nepalese populaton.
