Notes in the margin of the manuscript written by Ludwik Chmaj: ‘Franciszek Ksawery Michał Bohusz. His life and educational activity (1746–1820)’

Abstract

Franciszek Ksawery Michał Bohusz (1746–1820) and Ludwik Chmaj (1888–1959) were researchers and socio-political activists concerned with the prosperity of the Homeland. As bright observers of the real world, they saw the changing social, economic and philosophical developments in the epochs in which they lived. They also considered the creative channeling of these processes through educational projects as their responsibility towards the Republic of Poland. Practical ways of implementing such projects were analysed by L. Chmaj in the manuscript written in Vilnius in 1941 devoted to the life and educational activities of F.K.M. Bohusz. His educational initiatives were the result of working as a school inspector in the area under the control of the University of Vilnius, commitment to work in Warsaw Society of Friends of Science, writing activities devoted to, among others, moral and historical issues, and pastoral and political functions. In all these activities F.K.M. Bohusz remained faithful to the maxim: ‘an individual should devote all their talents to the society’. The experiences described by L. Chmaj, the referred judgments and opinions, have served in the article also as a starting point for highlighting some of the contemporary problems facing broadly understood education, such as: the consequences of the devaluation of the humanities within education, shaping altruistic attitudes as a form of preparation for life in a shrinking world, methodology of education yesterday and today and the professionalism of educators as the ethical obligation.
