НОВАЯ КНІГА ПРА АЛЯКСАНДРА ЛУКАШЭНКУ
Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2014, Vol 13, Issue 51
Abstract
The article is a critical review by Lavon Barszczeuski, Belarusian oppositionist, literati, publisher and former-deputy of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus (1990-96). In it he reviews a book published by “Znak” in Krakow in 2014, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of “Europe’s last dictator” coming to power in Belarus. Barszczeuski appreciates that the book’s authors took advantage of many published sources and statements of various Belarusian political scientists concerning “Lukashenko: the politician” and agrees with most of their evaluations and conclusions. Simultaneously Lavon Barszczeuski is of the opinion that the book would be even more valuable still if its authors had utilised interviews and memoirs of still-living individuals who were active in the political life of Belarus, especially in the first half of the 1990s. In referencing events that took place then, the reviewer, himself an active participant, reveals various important questions which have been ignored by publications on the subject. In his review, Lavon Barszczeuski takes advantage of fragments of his discussion with Andrzej Brzeziecki, one of the authors of the book: Łukaszenka. Niedoszły car Rosji (“Lukashenko – Russia’s would-be Tsar”).
