Nutritional status modification in primary school-age children as a prevention of metabolic syndrome

Abstract

One of the most important current causes of metabolic syndrome in children, besides irrational nutrition and lowering the quality of food products, is the low level of parents’ knowledge about healthpreserving and preventive measures for improving the health of children. The article addresses the problem of improving the health of children to prevent the development of metabolic syndrome through a program of medical and psychological support in a modern school, which includes the following stages: diagnostic (for identifying the problem), informational (improving the healthsavingcompetence of the participants in the educational process), preparatory (preparation of individual programs of support for each student, with the development of recommendations for parents and teachers), development (aimed at the harmonious development of students). The objective of this study was to justify the model of metabolic syndrome prevention in primary school pupils through the medical and psychological support of development of health preserving competence of parents on the basis of hygienic assessment of family nutrition. Materials and methods. The cross-sectional medicalstatistical study was carried out among the parents of 588 elementary school students studying in a big city (regional center — 243 children), small town (126 children) and rural areas (219 children). Results and discussion. One of the most important reasons for deterioration of health is the disturbance of the nutrition structure and the decline in its quality. The article describes the formation of the food culture of Ukrainian families. An analysis of the nutritional status of elementary school students found that only (3.6 ± 0.8) % of children eat 2 or less times a day. The overwhelming majority of children (88.8 ± 1.3) %) eat 3—4 times a day. A significant proportion of children do not receive meat, fish and dairy products daily. The recommended norm for daily consumption of vegetables and fruits by children is not met by 25 % of parents. Conclusions. The developed program of medical and psychological support corresponds to the strategy of the subject of targeted prevention, which takes into account the personal characteristics of the family and is based on its active attitude towards its own health and aims at solving the problem of development of metabolic syndrome of children of primary school age and reducing noncommunicable diseases among children.
