Abstract
What Do Treasures of Coins on Exhibitions in Lublin Museum Tell Us? Lublin Museum owns 60 group findings of coins – known as treasures – hidden from the ancient period up to the recent times. Among them, one was hidden in the antiquity, 8 in the medieval period, 1 (probably) at the beginning of the 16th century and 3 – in its last quarter. The 17th century treasures form the largest set – 39, mostly found on Polish territory. 5 treasures come from the 18th century and 3 – from the 19th and 20th centuries. The group findings of coins are an important source for studies on the widely-defined socio-economic history. They provide knowledge as to which coins were in use (and for how long) on our lands throughout centuries, and, as a result, they represent the economic, social and political events from the past. The composition of the treasures displays, to an extent, the structure of the financial market: it represents its changes and shows its standing, phases of growth, decline and disturbance. Among 60 treasures owned by the Lublin Museum, only a few of them are regularly on display, enriching the narration of several permanent exhibitions. The rest of them were not frequently shown to the visitors; the 1984 exhibition “Numismatic Treasures of Lublin Old Town” was, up to 2015, the only exhibition in the Museum’s history displaying the findings. In September 2015, on the “Treasures of Coins in Lublin Museum” Exhibition, 22 most interesting treasures were shown, beginning with the early-medieval group of Arabian dirhams discovered in 1945 on the outskirts of Lublin, through the findings from the late-medieval and early-modern times, up to the treasure of copper szeląg coins of the King Jan Kazimierz (1648–1668) hidden after 1695 in Rokitno (near Lubartów). Almost all of the groups from the medieval times and the 16th century, and 14 from the 17th century were displayed chronologically.
