Historia jednego ikonostasu
Journal Title: Studia i Materiały Lubelskie - Year 2015, Vol 18, Issue
Abstract
History of one iconostasis The inspiration for this article was the icon of St. Basil the Great painted in 1757 which originally came from the Orthodox church in Małków (Hrubieszów County), and which is currently stored in Lublin Museum (S/Mal/555/ML). Research on its provenience and history has led to the query in the State Archives in Lublin. Although the preserved archives do not reveal much about the icon itself, they contain interesting correspondence concerning the creation of the iconostasis for the church in Małków, which sheds light on the procedures that preceded the ordering and creation of iconostases, binding in Lublin Governorate in the 19th century. The preserved letters reveal the variety of people involved in the putting up of a single iconostasis – local administration representatives, members of national commissions, builders, craftsmen painters and patrons – as well as the problems which they encountered (e.g. their uncertainty about the exact application of national design guidelines in a specific and rather small church, or their financial dilemmas) and the methods that they used to solve them. Moreover, this correspondence is a valuable source of information on the costs of the work and materials used to furnish the church with the iconostasis. Therefore, the main aim of this article is to present the history of the creation of the Małków iconostas and to reveal at least a part of the variety of data stored in the Archives. Finally, the article is to be an incentive to draw the attention of researches and visitors to the collections of icons stored in Lublin Museum.
