Abstract
“What I leave behind, will be useful to people for long.” Life and activities of Oskar Kolberg (1814–1890) The present article is a profile of the researcher with regard to his activities as a folklorist. The text includes eleven parts, under the headings: Childhood and youth; The challenging thirties; Rebirth; First field expeditions; Publishing debut; Toward change; Composer activities; Songs of the Polish people; Life’s work – The Peoples... – and the Kraków period; Last years; In the eyes of the contemporaries. The author, using available subject literature, both from the 19th century and contemporary, focuses on the facts from the life of the folklorist, starting from his childhood in Przysucha and Warsaw, ending at the Krakow stage of life. She also presents the evolution of Oscar Kolberg’s research attitudes, starting as ethno-musicologist to become the cultural anthropologist.
