Obesity – the condition predisposing to vitamin D deficiency
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2012, Vol 25, Issue 3
Abstract
Obesity is nowaday well recognized as a global epidemic and is associated with various co-morbidities as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer (prostate, breast and colon cancer). Obese people are also predisposed to vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency accelerates bone mass loss which decreases the mechanical resistance of bone tissue, but has also influence on other tissues and organs.
Vitamin D deficiency defined as serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol) concentration < 30 ng/ml has also been identified as a worldwide public health issue. It has been well observed that obese individuals frequently have low circulating calcifediol concentration. The possible cause of vitamin D deficiency is avoiding the solar radiation (which comprises the UVB fraction responsible for the synthesis of the vitamin D in the skin), impaired vitamin D skin synthesis or sequestration of the vitamin D in the fatty tissue.
In this review we would like to present what is the relationship between low circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration and obesity and what is the possible role of adipose tissue as an endocrine system in vitamin D metabolism.
