Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 9
Abstract
Obesity incidence has reached epidemic proportions. In Poland, about 30% of women and 40% of men are overweight, and obesity occurs in about 20% of adults of both sexes. The growing incidence of excessive body weight among children and young people is alarming – now it concerns more than 10% of people in this age group. Obesity poses a threat to human health and life because it increases the risk development of chronic non-communicable diseases, such as, among other, cardiovascular disease, many cancers, type 2 diabetes, gallstones. Weight reduction is the main method of these diseases prevention and treatment. The basis of obesity therapy is a lifestyle modification including diet modification and increased physical activity. The aim ofsuch management is a negative energy balance achievement – the state in which the energy intake will be less than energy expenditure. In selected cases, drug therapy may be used, but now only the one medicine (orlistat) is available. In people with a BMI exceeding 40 kg/m2 or 35 kg/m2 with co-existence of obesity complications surgery should be considered. This article discusses the various methods of obesity treatment, with special consideration of dietary treatment and increase physical activity.
