Ocular Findings in Patients with Head Injury: A Clinical Study

Abstract

Background: Trauma to eyes is the reason of blindness amongst more than half a million subjects around the globe and reason for partial eye sight loss amongst many more and it is most often the reason behind unilateral loss of vision, especially in developing countries. The present study was conducted with the aim to determine the correlation between ophthalmic injuries in subjects of head trauma and find the frequency of different types of ophthalmic injuries in head trauma cases. Materials and methods: The present prospective study was conducted in the Department amongst 150 patients of head injury that were diagnosed by the neurosurgical team. Patients of open head injury, direct orbital trauma or injuries older than 12 hours were excluded from the study. The ocular injuries were divided into soft tissue injuries, neuroophthalmic abnormalities, and injuries to the orbit. All the data obtained was arranged in a tabulated form and analyzed using SPSS software. The information was expressed in percentage. Results: The present study included a total of 150 subjects with head injury. Table 1 demonstrates the demographic characteristics of the study. There were 130 (86.7%) males and 20(13.3%) females. Amongst the soft tissue injury, the most common was Periorbital ecchymosis, seen in 31 cases followed by Subconjuctival hemorrhage seen in 17 cases. There were 2 cases each of Sixth nerve palsy, Hyphema and Vitreous hemorrhage. Conclusion: Different forms and different degree of ocular trauma occurs amongst patients of head injury. The most common type of ocular injury in our study was Periorbital ecchymosis.
