Abstract

Memory is beyond learning, storing and remembering any kind of information. In addition to individual memory, groups of people which changes from a pair to millions regarding its size, can have common schemas called collective memory. Apart from history collective memory is a living phenomenon, hence it is vulnerable to manipulations. History is one of the most suitable devices to shape collective memory of the groups of people as well as building national identity. It is clearly known that in the process of the construction and maintenance of nation state, history education is commonly used with the help of collective memory in order to build national identity. In this paper we try to explore the relation between the collective memory and national identity with history teaching in the context of Turkish Republic History of Revolution and Kemalism lesson. If we state a general view about this study, we can say that the youth who is exposed to this lesson will have a determined collective memory and national identity which is an implicit objective of the nation state.
