Abstract

Polish-Austrian War was a part of the War of the Fifth Coalition in 1809. Polish-Austrian War was a part of the War of the Fifth Coalition in 1809. In this war Polish forces of the Napoleon – allied Duchy of Warsaw and assisted by some forces of the Kingdom of Saxony, fought against the Austrian Empire. Polish troops withstood the Austrian attack on Warsaw defeating them at Raszyn, then abandoned Warsaw in order to reconquer parts of pre-partition Poland including Kraków and Lwów, forcing the Austrians to abandon Warsaw in futile pursuit. Polish forces took the major cities of Lublin (14 May), Sandomierz (18 May), Zamość (20 May), and Lwów (27 May). The taking of Sandomierz on May 18, and 20 May Zamosc opened – Chief –. Jozef Poniatowski operate in the so-called. Old Galicia. Austrian VII corps despite losing in Sandomierz was still strong enough to pose a threat to slim the Polish forces. In this situation – Prince Joseph Poniatowski, May 19 decided to send two branches in the direction of Lviv and Yaroslavl and Leżajsk. The main force had to remain in the region of Sandomierz. Schauroth – arrived north of Sandomierz on 26 may and tried to press close to the walls the following day. Michał Sokolnicki, commanding a garrison of 6000 men, in this crucial city, had almost as many troops as Schauroth and was determined to maintain an active defence. The defeats of the Austrian attack, however, could, not alter Sokolnicki's impossible position. Surrounded with no hope of relief and facing vastly superior enemy, he chose to preserve his command for the future rather than sacrifice it in a fruitless siege. Negotiations generous terms and dragging the discussions out as long as feasible, he arranged for the last of his unbowed troops to depart on the morning 19 June 1809. The Austrians managed to defeat Zajączek at the battle of Jedlińsk on 11 June and took back Sandomierz (on June 18) and Lwów, but were unable to engage Poniatowski, who in the meantime had liberated Kielce and Kraków (15 July). The Austrians were finally intercepted and defeated by the French at the Battle of Wagram (5 July – 6 July).
