ON THE PERSONNEL STRUCTURE OF SUBUNIT 476 TS – 24 «MAKIVKA» (1947 – 1948)

Abstract

In the article four documents are published: the first is a reward letter of the personnel structure of Sbunit 476 of Tactical Sector (TS – 24) «Makivka»; the second is the letter of the political instructor of TS – 24 «Makivka» Volodymyr Hoshka-«Myron» to the commander of Unit 91 «Bassein» of TV–24 Vasyl Stupka-«Tarasko»; the third document comprises the list of persons, compromised by indications of the persons arrested on the investigatory case № 643 of UMSS (Ukrainian Ministry of State Security) of Drohobych region; the fourth is the staff list of Subunit 476 (of July 19th, 1947). All the documents in view essentially supplement the available information on the structure and cadre composition of TS =24 «Makivka». Problem statement. A complex research of the history of Ukrainian liberation movement in general and its separate administrative components in particular, in spite of the presence of a considerable amount of documents, still remains a difficult and little studied problem. One of such insufficiently investigated fields of insurgents’ actions is the Tactical Section 24 «Makivka». Thus, the available amount of source materials on the insurgent movement in TS – 24 «Makivka» gives a chance to draw up an integral and, which is the main thing, objective picture of those events. The article’s purpose is to add available information on the personnel filling of TS – 24 «Makivka» («Summit») in general and Unit 91 «Bassein» («Swimming Pool»). The study of regional aspects of the functioning of Ukrainian liberation movement – notwithstanding the openness of archival funds – still remains an uneasy task. The first reason for this is a considerable source gaps and, also, the necessity of observance of principles of severe conspiracy for the activity of OUN and UPA. It was these principles that stipulated a careful coding of each fighter’s personal data. To this another circumstance may be added (especially, at the initial stage of 1944 – 1945 struggle), namely, that the UPA units went into open armed skirmishes with the Soviet force groups in which the majority of insurgents perished, while those taken prisoners at questionings could not (through the aforementioned conspiracy, they did not have the information) or did not want to name real names, surnames, birth places and detailed biographic data on commanders and fighters of their subunit. Researchers are in the know about the encoded lists of several UPA subunits by different time periods. However, such encoded lists which concern TS–24«Makivka» number but a few. Historians are necessitated to reconstruct the strength of its subunits, literally, in a crumb-by-crumb manner. Conclusions. Thus, the published documents essentially add to the picture off unctioning of the Tactical Section TS –24 «Makivka». It is necessay to notice that the published documents are an important source for a complex research of the Ukrainian liberation movement on the whole and the laws of functioning of TS – 24 «Makivka» particularly.
