ONCE AGAIN ON THE PRODUCTIVITY OF VERBAL NOUNS ENDING IN -NÍ / -TÍ
Journal Title: Мова - Year 2017, Vol 0, Issue 27
Abstract
The object of the article is verbs that do not produce verbal nouns with action semantics. Some aspects of the theory of Czech verbal nouns ending in -ní / -tí are under review. The subject of analysis is the possibility to form substantives ending in -ní / -tí from a range of verbs traditionally recognized as «defective» in this regard. The purpose of the study is to disclose the nature of the word formation of verbal nouns in the light of the problem of their part-of-speech status. The methodology comprises semantic and transformational analysis as well as continuous sampling. The fi ndings of analysing data of the SYN series of the Czech language synchronic corpora are the following: verbal nouns ending in -ní / -tí can be derived from the range of the aforementioned «defective» verbs; since these substantives retain the action semantics, it helps maintain correlation diff erences in their semantic structure. The results are that word building of verbal nouns in Czech is paradigmatic and it has a form building tendency. The practical value of the research results is that the latter can be used in solving the problem of the part-of-speech status of such nomina actionis in the West Slavic languages.
