Oral cavity soda lye burn– case report

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2011, Vol 7, Issue 4

Abstract

Chemical burns of the mouth happen most often in 2- to 4-year-old children. Child minders are responsible for them since they often leave dangerous substances improperly packaged and within easy reach of children. Depending on the kind of substance, its concentration, state and time of the oral mucosa`s exposure to it, chemical burns of different severity may develop. When in contact with the mucous membrane, acidic preparations cause burns resulting in coagulation scar necrosis. This type of necrosis commonly involves superficial layers of the mucosa, rarely leading to deeper perforation. Chemicals of the alkaline nature bring about much more severe burns with dismal prognosis. Alkaline substances, when in contact with the mucosa, cause much more damage to the mucous membrane leading to extensive necrosis. In the healing process of this kind extensive constricted scars are produced, which often results in total obstruction of the lumen of the organ and lack of its patency. The aim of the study was to present the state of the mouth in a patient who accidentally drank Kret, a toxic chemical substance used for clearing drain pipes. (Orthod. Forum 2011; 7: 204 -10).
