Oral nifedepine vs. intra-venous labetalol in management of hypertension in severe pre-eclampsia

Journal Title: IJAR-Indian Journal of Applied Research - Year 2017, Vol 7, Issue 6

Abstract

Introduction: Pre-eclampsia (PE) continues to be a major obstetric problem in present day health care practice. It presents a great medical dilemma because it affects not only maternal health but also puts foetal development at risk. Objectives: To compare oral nifedepine with intravenous labetalol in their efficiency to control hypertension in severe pre eclampsia (PE). Methods: One hundred women with severe PE were randomized to receive either oral Nifedepine or intra venous Labetalol. Data collected was analysed using appropriate statistical tests. P value <0.05 was considered significant. Results: The present study showed no significant difference between the Nifedipine and Labetalol groups with reduction in systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure (MAP) values after 30 minutes of drug administration. Conclusion: Both oral nifedepine and intra venous labetalol are highly effective in acute and rapid control of hypertension in severe PE.
