The directions of such work were realized through the establishment of primary parish schools, libraries and bookshops, and the dissemination of religious literature. They carried out educa- tional work in order to raise the religious, moral and cultural standard of living of the people in the Volyn province. One of the important tasks that the fraternities had to carry out was the organization and conduct of folk reading and conversa- tions of religious and moral orientation. Each fraternity formed own program of organizing and conducting folk lectures, choosing their subjiects. The subjiects of the reading included not only dogmatics and morals, but also church-historical. Mostly the readings were focused on the untested population of Volyn province and had a propaganda character in the spirit of orthodoxy. This work was carried out in the form of public lectures, group discussions. The subjects of spiritual and moral readings mainly covered the main aspects of the orthodox doctrine, sometimes they were the themes of the his- tory of the Russian Empire. It should be noted that the educational goal, which the members of the fraternities determined during the readings, was realized. Members of the fraternities managed to attract a significant amount of local population of cities and villages of the Volyn province during the second half of XIX century to participate in popular reading.
