ORIGINS OF ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISM

Abstract
Fundamentalism is a commonly-used term in describing the ultra-conservative expres-sions of Islamic faith groups. Amongst many scholars of Islam, there is a preference for terms such as Islamism. Although Islamic fundamentalism is indeed a modern phenomenon, it cannot be properly understood outside the larger context of Islamic faith and Muslim history. The fundamentalists wanted to come back to the roots of Islam in order to purify and renew it by focusing on the principles of the earliest generations of Islam, the salaf.
