ORIGINS OF THE UKRAINIAN NATIONALISM, OUN DEVELOPMENT AND GENEALOGY (1891–2005).
Journal Title: Науковий і культурно-просвітній краєзнавчий часопис Галичина - Year 2017, Vol 29, Issue
Abstract
In the article the author analyzes the organizational origins of the Ukrainian nationalism, the formation process of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, its influence on the national liberation struggle in 40– 50-ies of XX century, the emigration period in the history of the activities and the activity resumption in the independent Ukraine. The author states that the first manifestations of the Ukrainian organized nationalism appeared in the late XIX – early XX century on Dnieper Ukraine (Naddniprianshchyna). However, after the Ukrainian War of Independence the best conditions for the development of the Ukrainian nationalism were in Halychyna (Galicia). A number of the nationalist organizations arose here and in emigration (Czechoslovakia, Germany) in the 20’s of the XX century. In 1929 they united into OUN, which became the organizer of the national liberation struggle in the 40-50-ies of the XX century. In the course of the analysis, the author focuses on the internal discussions, creation of OUN independent formations, and builds the genealogy of the national organizations related to the primary OUN. Thus, in 1939-1940 it was divided into two organizations – the OUN-M (OUN-Melnyk’s) and the OUN-B (OUN-Bandera’s). During the Second World War, both OUNs succeeded in creating a number of military formations. The most famous of them was the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). In the postwar period, they continued their activities in exile. During this period, a group of members left the OUN-B and created OUN-overseas. With the proclamation of Independence, both OUNs transfer their activities to Ukraine. OUN-M is registered as a civil organization. In 2005 a group of members left OUN-M and created the OUN-“statesmen’s”. The OUN-B has not been legalized in Ukraine and has acts through its “facade” structures. In 1993 there was another OUN registered (in Ukraine), which is not related to the genealogy of the OUN.
