Orthodontic education for a changing professional environment

Abstract
The undergraduate clinical orthodontic curriculum atHU-Hadassah SDM was changed in 1996 based on feedbackfrom graduates obtained by a survey. The 1995 modificationleft the lecture-based theoretical orthodonticcourse largely intact. AIM: to investigate the possible effectof the curriculum change on the practice style of thegraduates. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 2001, thesame survey as used in 1995 was mailed to 516 dentistswho graduated between the years 1988-1994 (graduatedbefore change of curriculum; Group I) and between 1995-2000 (after curriculum change; Group II). The participantswere given the choice of anonymity. RESULTS: Theusable response from this sample was 133 (25.8%) with 61dentists in group 1 and 72 in group 2. Comparisons betweenGroups I and II were performed. The perceived clinicaluse of the orthodontic theoretical knowledge in thedaily practice as indicated by Group II was not significantlydifferent compared to Group I while the contribution ofthe clinical knowledge was reduced significantly. Comparisonof Groups I + II combined, with the results of theprevious survey showed a significant reduction in the perceivedcontribution of theoretical and clinical orthodonticknowledge to daily practice. CONCLUSIONS: the changein the curriculum was only one factor that affected the graduates’performance; other factors such as shifts in the modeof practicing dentistry could be influential as well.
