OTTOMAN'S MARINE IN THE EMPIRE BUILDING PROCESS

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 50

Abstract

In the second half of the XIIIth century, the Ottomans succeeded in a short time in the struggles against Byzantium. But the achievements achieved in these struggles were based on land operations. On the seas, no progress was made. During the same period, the existing marine units of the Ottomans, whose military units were composed of irregular pedestrians and artifacts, were few. This prevented the over-sea operations against Byzantium. With the annexation of the Karesi Principality in 1348, the need for seafarers was partially met. Increasing maritime initiatives until the time of II.Murad brought with it control regions created in Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea. II.Mehmed's conquest of Istanbul brought Ottoman maritime to a new point.
