OUTCOMES OF TEMPORARY CEMENTS ON THE BOND STRENGTH OF GLASS IONOMER LUTING CEMENT

Journal Title: IDA Ludhiana's Journal - Le Dentistry - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this paper is to estimate the effect that the various types of temporary luting cements have on the bond strength of the final cementation using glass ionomer luting cements. Material and Methods: Sixty human teeth were divided in two parts and assigned to 3 groups (n=20): I : no temporary cement used; II: zinc oxide based cement; III: zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE)-based cement. Final cementation was done with Type I glass ionomer cement (GC, Fuji, Japan). Data was analysed statistically. Results: Mean bond strength values in the various groups show a statistically significant difference when using any type of temporary luting cement (p<0.05). Bond strengths in various groups were (MPa): I - 4.50 ±1.18; II - 5.38 ±2.18; III – 3.36±0.84. The group where no temporary cement was used showed a significantly higher (p<0.05) bond strength when compared to the group where ZOE based cement was used. Conclusion: Temporary cementation with ZOE based cements significantly hampers the final bond strength of glass ionomer cements.
