Overview of vegetable preparations for use in the dysfunction of mucosa of mouth and throat

Abstract

Phytotherapy is currently experiencing a renaissance, but in contrast to the var iety of methods kno wn as the so-called alternative medicine, the che mical compo unds in plants have well documented biologic al effect. It is emphasized that the compo sition of these compounds and their relativ ely low concentr ation minimizes the risk of side effects. Drugs of plant origin are used in all branches of otolaryngology. This article discusses available drugs on the domest ic market of preparations of natura l origin intended for topical application in the states of dysfunction of the mout h and throat mucosa. Among the ingredients of these drugs include calendula, sea buckthorn, Iceland moss, sage, myrrh, peppermint, lemo n balm, thyme and propolis extracted from beeswax. Drugs made from these stuf f have a well-documented bacteriosta tic, immunom odulatory, expectorant, antitussive, radioprotective action . They can be used on its own in chronic conditions or in combination with other drugs in the acute infl ammatio ns.
