Palatal width in children after surgical closure of the cleft
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2005, Vol 1, Issue 5
Abstract
AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate anteriorand posterior palatal width in children with cleft palate aswell as to evaluate its relation to the type of cleft and age ofthe studied children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thestudy included 98 children after surgical closure of differenttypes of cleft palate and 30 noncleft children with normalocclusion. All the children with cleft palate included in thestudy had undergone surgical cleft lip and/ or palate repairand had no presurgical orthodontic treatment. The criteriafor choosing the control group were: absence of cleft, normalocclusion, i.e. Angle’s Class I, correct overbite and overjetas well as absence of crossbite. The age of the studiedchildren ranged from 7.0 to 13.6 years, whereas the age rangeof the control group was from 8.5 to 13.4 years. The meanage in both groups was relatively similar, i.e. 9.7 years in thestudied group and 10.3 years in the control group. Orthodonticmeasurements of the anterior palatal width were performedon diagnostic models at the level of either the firstdeciduous molars (IV + IV) or the first permanent premolars (4 + 4), whereas the measurements of the posteriorpalatal width were performed at the level of the first permanentmolars (6 + 6); the measurements were carried outwith the use of the Korkhaus space divider. RESULTS: Thevalues of palatal width measurements were smaller in cleftchildren. CONCLUSION: The width of the palate in childrenwho had previously had cleft palate repair was generallydecreased in comparison with the noncleft children, except for isolated cleft lip and alveolus, in which both theanterior and posterior palatal widths were similar to thoseobserved in noncleft children. Narrrowing of the palatewas more pronounced in its anterior rather than posteriorsection. (Orthod. Forum 2005; 1:142-9)
