Pancreatic steatosis in children. Part 1. Etiology, epidemiology and pathogenesis

Journal Title: Гастроентерологія - Year 2017, Vol 51, Issue 1

Abstract

The article deals with the pancreatic steatosis (PS) in children — a pathological condition that is characterized by accumulation of fat in the pancreas. PS in patients with obesity and overweight in case of exclusion of other causes of steatosis is described by the term “non-alcoholic fatty disease of the pancreas”. The review presents data concerning the history of the study, etiology, epidemiology and pathogenesis of this pathology. It is shown that the disease pathogenesis is based on the excess of free fatty acids, resulting in the accumulation of fat in pancreas, islet and acinar cells dysfunction and, consequently, — disorders of carbohydrate metabolism and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Data search was performed by using databases Scopus, Web of Science, MedLine, PubMed, Google Scholar, CyberLeninka, RSCI with the following keywords: “pancreatic steatosis”, “non-alcoholic fatty disease of the pancreas”, “children”.
