Pantograph-Catenary Relation of Urban Rail Transit Lines under Catenary Iced Condition

Journal Title: Urban Mass Transit - Year 2025, Vol 28, Issue 2

Abstract

[Objective] Under the condition of ice forming on catenary surface (hereinafter referred to as ′iced condition′), the normal current collection of train pantograph is disrupted. In severe cases, arcing may occur between the pantograph and the catenary, leading to severe catenary wear and pantograph carbon slide strip damages. To ensure reliable train operation in frozen winter environments, it is essential to investigate the influence of train operating speed on the dynamic characteristics of the PC (pantograph-catenary) system under iced conditions. [Method] Based on finite element theory, a dynamic model of the PC system for urban rail transit lines under catenary iced conditions is developed. Simulation calculation results of catenary sagging conditions are obtained in four selected scenarios with ice thicknesses of 5 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm, and 20 mm. On this basis, the impact of PC system dynamic characteristics (contact force variation, vibration at positioning points) under iced conditions are analyzed. [Result & Conclusion] As the ice thickness increases, the sagging of catenary becomes more pronounced, and the overall irregularity of the catenary shape intensifies; hereby larger ice thickness va-lues result in greater amplitudes of the contact force in PC system.
