Abstract

Tourism and recreation are health promoting ways of spending leisure time. The objective of the study was assessment of the participation of the disabled rural and urban population from the Lublin Region in the forms of tourism and recreation activities. The following aspects were studied: amount of respondents’ free time, most preferable forms of tourism and recreation, skills possessed, and motives for undertaking activities, as well as benefits from participation in tourism and recreation, and barriers rendering this participation impossible. The study was conducted with the use of a diagnostic survey, with the use of a questionnaire form. The study group was randomly selected by the method of stratified sampling, and covered 360 disabled from the rural (57.5 %) and urban (42.5 %) population in the Lublin Region. The results obtained show that the disabled in the study had a large amount of free time. More than half of them went on rehabilitation stays, coach tours, holidays, and to a sanatorium. The majority of respondents did not participate in motor recreation; they preferred going for a walk or rehabilitation gymnastics. The skills possessed by the respondents were primarily riding a bicycle, followed by playing football, playing badminton, and swimming. Reasonable prices, good company, and professional staff were the crucial motives for undertaking activity. The benefits from the activity perceived by the respondents were good general wellbeing, improvement of the state of health, and making contacts. The greatest limitation was the financial barrier, followed by difficult access and lack of information.
