Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 2

Abstract

At present, the actions undertaken in order to improve the state of health of adolescents are not producing satisfactory results; therefore, an in-depth analysis based on self-reported health and wellbeing seems to be necessary. Assessment of the health-related quality of life is currently one of the important methods recommended by the World Health Organization which makes it possible to detect some abnormalities in physical, mental and social performance, identify individuals facing health problems, and take some preventive actions. The aim of the research undertaken was the recognition of health problems and assessment of the health-related quality of life among secondary school students. In this study, the Polish version of the KIDSCREEN 52 questionnaire for the assessment of the health-related quality of life of children and adolescents was used, which enabled the general health self-assessment of health of the adolescents examined, primarily the assessment of the HRQOL from the following aspects: physical and psychological well-being, moods and emotions, self-perception, parent relations and family life, peers and social support, independence, school environment, social acceptance and financial resources. The study group consisted of 588 secondary school adolescents: 317 boys and 271 girls, aged 16–18. Analysis of the obtained results showed that the most common health problems among the school population are: faulty posture, visual impairments, allergies, overweight and obesity. Only the occurrence of health problems among girls had a slight influence on a better assessment of financial resources, parent relations and family life. The use of the KIDSCREEN questionnaire may play an important role in the assessment of the health of children and adolescents, and in the early diagnosing of possible threats to subjective health.Key words: adolescents, health problems, health-related quality of life
