Assessment of knowledge of patients with known coronary heart disease on elimination of risk factors for this disease as an element of a health-promoting life style

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2014, Vol 20, Issue 2

Abstract

Background and Aim of Study. The elimination of risk factors is particularly significant in prophylaxis and treatment of coronary heart disease. The aim of the study was to assess the level of knowledge of patients with known coronary heart disease on elimination of risk factors for coronary heart disease as an element of health-promoting life style. Materials and Methods. A voluntary questionnaire study was conducted between September 2011 – February 2012 and involved 100 patients of the Interventional Cardiology Centre, Department of Cardiology and Internal Medicine, Military Institute of Medicine in Warsaw, who were in the convalescence phase following coronary angioplasty. Group A comprised 50 patients with known coronary heart disease, whereas Group B comprised patients without documented disease. Questionnaire: 42 close-ended simple choice questions. STATISTICA 10.0 (licensed to Warsaw Medical University), Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were used (p<0.05). Results. The comparison of knowledge of the patients from Groups A and B demonstrated significant differences (p<0.05) in the following areas: disease as a significant factor that influences one’s lifestyle; arterial hypertension and its treatment; smoking and methods of smoking cessation; periods when coronary heart disease occurs in diabetics; health-related behaviour common for patients with diabetes mellitus, and those with coronary heart disease; sources of coronary heart disease; willingness to change selected risk factors. Conclusions: 1. A disharmony between a high level of knowledge of patients on the influence of their lifestyle on the incidence of coronary heart disease and prevalence of a number of risk factors in these patients proves that there is a necessity to introduce health-related programmes which would support the real elimination of these factors. 2. The fact that patients decide to change their lifestyle only after the ACS trauma highlights the necessity to promote activities associated with primary and secondary prevention of this disease. 3. The supplementation of knowledge of patients with coronary heart disease on the influence of the elimination of risk factors on the limitation of outcomes of this disease is important for the development of health seeking lifestyle.
